Segway owner dies after falling off river cliff

LONDON – A wealthy British businessman who owns the company that makes the two-wheeled Segway has been found dead in a river in northern England after apparently falling off a cliff on one of the vehicles, police said Monday.
The body of 62-year-old Jimi Heselden and a Segway personal transporter were found in the River Wharfe and he was pronounced dead at the scene, West Yorkshire Police said.
A witness had reported seeing a man fall Sunday over a 30-foot (9-meter) drop into the river near the village of Boston Spa, 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of London.
"The incident is not believed to be suspicious," police said, indicating that they do not believe anyone else was involved.
Heselden, who bought control of the Bedford, New Hampshire-based Segway company in December, made his fortune through his firm Hesco Bastion Ltd., which developed a successful blast wall system that replaced the sand bags once used to protect troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Hesco Bastion confirmed that Heselden "died in a tragic accident near his home in West Yorkshire."
Police have not revealed further details about the incident. A dozen members of Heselden's family asked for privacy Monday after placing flowers at the heavily wooded accident site, which is popular with hikers and nature lovers.
The battery-powered Segway, which is stabilized by gyroscopes, was invented by Dean Kamen, who founded the company in 1999. Kamen was traveling Monday and could not be immediately reached for comment.
The unique Segway transporter relies on electricity to recharge its batteries and travels at speeds up to 12.5 mph (20 kph), the company says on its website. It is more protective of the environment than other scooters and automobiles, the company says, claiming it is 11 times more efficient than the average American car and also can be used indoors because it has no emissions.
Yet the lack of information about the circumstances surrounding Heselden's death prompted new questions about the Segway's safety record — concerns that have been raised before.
The company recalled all its U.S. vehicles in 2006 because of a software problem that could cause its wheels to reverse direction, causing riders to fall off. The vehicle has also not been approved in Britain for road use, despite protests from Segway loyalists.
Segways have been banned by some U.S. cities but have also been embraced by other U.S. police departments as a useful tool in community patrols.
President George W. Bush tried a Segway at his family's home in Maine in 2003 but the vehicle fell over when he tried to get on. The president was able to hop over the transporter and was unhurt.
British TV host Piers Morgan, set to replace Larry King on CNN, also fell off a Segway — one of dozens of Segway mishaps that can be seen on YouTube.
Heselden left school at 15 and first worked as a coal miner before becoming a businessman and later a well known philanthropist in Britain. Hesco Bastion is a privately held company based in Leeds, near the tough Halton Moor area where Heselden grew up.
The company said Heselden recently gave 10 million pounds ($15.9 million) to the Leeds Community Foundation, raising his total charitable giving to 23 million pounds.
"Jimi was an amazing man who, apart from being a wonderful success story for Leeds due to his business acumen, was also remarkably selfless and generous, giving millions to local charities to help people in his home city," said Tom Riordan, the chief executive of Leeds City Council.
He described Heselden as a quiet, good-natured man who was tremendously proud of being from Leeds and who believed that those who had prospered had an obligation to help others.
"There are people out there who are making money, and when times are good I honestly believe people have a moral obligation to use their wealth to help others," Heselden told the Yorkshire Post earlier this year. "Life turned out pretty well for me, but I still work in the same area where I grew up, and everyday I see people who for whatever reason are down on their luck."
Hesco barriers, wire frames that are fitted with liners and filled with dirt, sand or rocks, have mushroomed around the world's battlefields, where U.S. and its allied troops use them to protect their bases. The barriers have also been used to fortify flood walls in places like New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina or to stop oil from fouling delicate marshes along the southern U.S. coast during the massive BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Despite the YouTube videos, one U.S. businessman was quick to defend the Segway's safety record.
Mobile Entertainment, which has offered Segway tours along the Mississippi River for the past seven years, has had more than 40,000 customers — most of them new to Segway — ride the device without any serious injuries, owner Bill Neuenschwander told The Associated Press.
"Nobody's gone off a river, nobody," he said, speaking Monday from Minneapolis, Minnesota. "I can tell you firsthand: I can't believe how safe this product is."
He said the Segway was also easy to use off the road — on gravel, grass, hills or other steep inclines.
"People get it right away," he said. "This product is perfectly safe when people respect its limitations."

Suspected hackers in Chavez`s twitter account

Caracas (ANTARA News/AFP) - Hackers appear to have broken into the Twitter account of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, Interior Minister Tareck El Aissami said Saturday.

The account had shown "irregularities" since September 22 and at least three messages in @chavezcandanga were not written by the populist Venezuelan leader, El Aissami said.

"They entered it without authorization," the minister said, adding that it was being fixed so that the president could keep sending messages, on the eve of key elections to renew Venezuela`s National Assembly.

Venezuelan officials had sought help from the United States for an investigation by the administrators of the popular social network.

Chavez receives hundreds of Twitter messages daily and has more than 850,000 followers.

iPhone 4 orders exceed 200,000 in China

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Pre-orders for Apple Inc's iPhone 4 in China have exceeded 200,000 units since the handsets went on sale on Saturday, China Unicom said, adding that it has stopped taking online orders because of strong demand.
About 60,000 buyers had received phones through China Unicom so far, the mobile operator said in a statement. By comparison, it took about six weeks to sell 100,000 iPhone 3GS handsets in 2009.
The iPhone 4 is being offered through China Unicom on a two-year mobile subscription contract and also through Apple retail stores in China, the world's largest mobile phone market with more than 800 million subscribers.
China Unicom, which counts China Mobile Ltd and China Telecom Corp Ltd as its competitors, is the sole distributor of Apple's iPhone in the country. Sales for previous generations of the iPhone were slow because of its high price.

Twitter Hit with Second Worm in a Week, Spread Via 'WTF' Link

Days after a site update unleashed a Twitter cross-scripting attack, the micro-blogging site was again hit with a bug that spread via questionable links.
"A malicious link is making the rounds that will post a tweet to your account when clicked on," Twitter wrote on its status blog Sunday afternoon.
The offending messages appeared on a user's Twitter feed with "WTF:" followed by a link. If you clicked on that link, you were taken to a blank page, but behind the scenes, the worm would post vulgar messages on your account that discussed, well, sex involving goats.
"Clicking on the WTF link would take you to a webpage which contained some trivial code which used a CSRF (cross-site request forgery) technique to automatically post from the visitor's Twitter account," according to a blog post from Sophos's Graham Cluley. "All the user sees if they visit the link is a blank page, but behind the scenes it has sent messages to Twitter to post from your account."
The message did not spread if you were not signed into your Twitter account at the time. Cluley suggested the attack spread so quickly because people were eager to find out what might warrant a "WTF" label.
Twitter said Sunday evening that it had fixed the exploit and was in the process of removing the offending tweets, but Cluley said that attack "highlighted an obvious security problem in Twitter which must be addressed as a matter of urgency - otherwise we can expect further (perhaps more dangerous) attacks."

Iran says Bushehr nuclear plant not damaged by Stuxnet

TEHRAN (Reuters) – A computer virus that experts said may have been created by a state did not affect Iran's nuclear plant or government systems, but did hit computers of staff at the plant and Internet providers, officials said on Sunday.
A senior official at U.S. technology company Symantec told Reuters on Friday that 60 percent of the computers worldwide infected by the so-called Stuxnet worm were in Iran, prompting speculation that the nuclear power plant may have been targeted in an attempt at sabotage or espionage.
Some Western cyber security companies suggested the attack could only have been conducted "with nation-state support," indicating industrial plants in the Islamic state were the target.
The head of the Bushehr nuclear power plant said the virus had only affected personal computers of staff.
"A team is inspecting several computers to remove the malware ... major systems of the plant have not been damaged," Mahmoud Jafari told the official IRNA news agency.
Russia was fiercely criticized by the West for involvement in completing the long-mothballed plant. Moscow says the plant is purely civilian.
GOVERNMENT SYSTEMS
Iran's Telecommunications Minister Reza Taqipour said the worm had not been able to "penetrate or cause serious damage to government systems," the state-run newspaper Iran Daily reported.
Authorities said Iran had identified some 30,000 Internet providers infected by the Stuxnet worm, blaming Iran's "foreign enemies for creating the virus."
Diplomats and security sources say Western governments and Israel view sabotage as one way of slowing Iran's nuclear work, which the West fears is aimed at building bombs. Tehran says it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity.
The malware attacks software programs that run Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, or SCADA, systems. Such systems are used to monitor automated plants -- from food and chemical facilities to power generators.
"The Stuxnet spy worm has been created in line with the West's electronic warfare against Iran," the newspaper quoted Mahmoud Liayi, secretary of the Information Technology Council of the Industries Ministry, as saying.
Israel, which is assumed to have the Middle East's only atomic arsenal, has hinted it could attack Iran's nuclear facilities if international diplomacy fails to curb the country's program. Iran refuses to recognize Israel.

Google Cake Doodle Marks 12th Birthday: A Look Back

Monday is Google's twelfth birthday and the search giant is celebrating once again with a new Google Doodle on its homepage. This year's doodle is a painting by American artist Wayne Thiebaud and features a simple birthday cake with Google's logo and one candle. Thiebaud, born in 1920, is well known for painting images of cakes, ice cream, candy, and toys.
It's not clear how the company decides when to celebrate its birthday as Google.com was registered on September 15, 1997 and Google wasn't incorporated until September 4, 1998. The company has also celebrated its birthday on September 7 instead of September 27 on at least two occasions. Regardless, it's been at least twelve years since Google became an indispensable way to help us navigate the Web. So in celebration of Google's birthday, here's a look back at Google's annual birthday doodles.
2002: Happy 4th Birthday
Google may be twelve, but its annual birthday doodle didn't appear until September 27, 2002. The company turned the "L" into a 4, and threw itself a party with virtual confetti and a simple white birthday cake. Google launched Google News in September 2002, and that month was one of the earliest times the Chinese government blocked access to Google. In October 2002, Google.com was hijacked within China and users were redirected Tianwang Search, a search engine operated by Peking University.
2003: Happy 5th Birthday
Google celebrated its fifth birthday on September 7, 2003, and it was cake and candles for Google again with the second "G" turned into a 5. That year, Google acquired Pyra Labs, the company behind Blogger, and launched the AdSense advertising service. This was also the year that Microsoft started building its own search product, and Amazon announced plans to develop a search engine dedicated to e-commerce, according to Wired.
2004: Happy 6th Birthday
Google went on a diet in 2004, choosing to celebrate its birthday on September 7 with just balloons, confetti and the second "O" turned into a 6. The month before its birthday, the search giant had its first initial public offering. The company said it sold 19,605,052 shares of class A common stock with an opening price of $85 per share. At the time of this writing, Google's stock price was $534.23.
2005: Happy 7th Birthday
Perhaps making up for going without cake the year previous, Google went all out for its seventh birthday on September 27. The search giant's doodle included 7 pieces of cake and the "L" became a 7. This was a big year for Google, with notable launches including Google Maps, Google Earth, Google Scholar, personalized home pages (later to be called iGoogle), Google Talk, and Google Reader. Google also experienced its first headaches with Google Book Search when a group of 8000 writers opposed the search giant's plans to scan and index the libraries at Harvard, Stanford, Michigan, and Oxford universities, according to The Boston Globe.
2006: Happy 8th Birthday
It was a one-cupcake birthday for Google on September 27, 2006 with the second "G" morphing into an 8. This was another year of debuts for Google with services such as Picasa desktop client and Web albums, Google Talk, Google Calendar, and Google Checkout. In October, Google announced its acquisition of YouTube and launched Google Docs.
2007: Happy 9th Birthday
Google went with a Mexican theme for its September 27, 2007 birthday celebration using a piñata in place of the second 'g.' This was the year that competitors and interest groups protested Google's acquisition of Web-based ad provider, DoubleClick.
2008
Celebrating a decade, Google added an exclamation point to its logo along with the usual birthday trappings on September 27, 2008. The most notable event for Google in 2008 was the launch of its first Android-based phone, the T-Mobile G1. Recently, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said there are about 200,000 Android activations every day. A close second to Android's debut was the non-beta launch of Chrome, Google's Web browser.
2009
Showing a bit more maturity than previous years, Google simply added another "L" to its logo to stand in for the number 11. There were no birthday cakes, candles or confetti just the stark realization that Google was yet another year older. In its eleventh year, Google announced the forthcoming Google Chrome OS for netbooks. The great Google outage in May left 14 percent of Google users around the world without access to the search giant's services for several hours.
2010
For Google's twelfth birthday, the search giant is trying to become a part of your living room with Google TV. Google launched the now infamous Pac Man doodle that supposedly sapped American productivity for a day, and Samsung announced the Android-based Galaxy Tab. Google also came under fire for its Wi-Fi snooping scandal and its oft-criticized net neutrality pact with Verizon. The company also received praise and scorn for its showdown with the Chinese government over censorship.
It's been an interesting twelve years for Google and who knows what the next year will have in store for the company. Will Google finally turn to evil and away from its unofficial motto? Will Google require more government oversight as it becomes an even bigger gatekeeper for the world's data? Or will it just continue to give us more and more free stuff to use online? We'll have to wait until 2011 to find out.

Apple TV now shipping

Internet reports of shipping delays for Apple’s revamped Apple TV turned out to not be worth the virtual paper they were printed on. Customers who’ve ordered Apple’s set-top box have begun receiving e-mail notifications that their devices are on the way.
Apple unveiled a sleeker Apple TV at the start of September, with Steve Jobs telling reporters at a Sept. 1 music event that the device would ship in four weeks’ time.
Last week, however, some Internet sites reported that the Apple TV wouldn’t arrive until mid-October, using an e-mail from Apple (and some flimsy logic) to make their case. The e-mail offered to refund expedited shipping for some Apple TV pre-orders—a not-unprecedented practice by Apple.
Cut to Monday, when early Apple TV adopters around the Internet, including several Macworld contributors, received e-mail confirmations that indeed their Apple TVs had shipped. One contributor’s confirmation email promises delivery by October 1st, although FedEx’s estimate actually predicts that the Apple TV will arrive one day sooner—on September 30.
The new Apple TV, you’ll recall, is smaller, blacker, and hard drive-less compared to its predecessor, relying on renting and streaming to watch the TV shows and movies you crave. We’ll have a detailed first look at the device as soon as it arrives in our office—on schedule, as it turns out.

Report: US would make Internet wiretaps easier

WASHINGTON – Broad new regulations being drafted by the Obama administration would make it easier for law enforcement and national security officials to eavesdrop on Internet and e-mail communications like social networking Web sites and BlackBerries, The New York Times reported Monday.
The newspaper said the White House plans to submit a bill next year that would require all online services that enable communications to be technically equipped to comply with a wiretap order. That would include providers of encrypted e-mail, such as BlackBerry, networking sites like Facebook and direct communication services like Skype.
Federal law enforcement and national security officials say new the regulations are needed because terrorists and criminals are increasingly giving up their phones to communicate online.
"We're talking about lawfully authorized intercepts," said FBI lawyer Valerie E. Caproni. "We're not talking about expanding authority. We're talking about preserving our ability to execute our existing authority in order to protect the public safety and national security."
The White House plans to submit the proposed legislation to Congress next year.
The new regulations would raise new questions about protecting people's privacy while balancing national security concerns.
James Dempsey, the vice president of the Center for Democracy and Technology, an Internet policy group, said the new regulations would have "huge implications."
"They basically want to turn back the clock and make Internet services function the way that the telephone system used to function," he told the Times.
The Times said the Obama proposal would likely include several requires:
-Any service that provides encrypted messages must be capable of unscrambling them.
-Any foreign communications providers that do business in the U.S. would have to have an office in the United States that's capable of providing intercepts.
-Software developers of peer-to-peer communications services would be required to redesign their products to allow interception.
The Times said that some privacy and technology advocates say the regulations would create weaknesses in the technology that hackers could more easily exploit.

Google says over 30 million people using Google Apps

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Google said Monday that more than 30 million people are using Google Apps, as the company unveiled enhanced security features for the Web-based suite of office tools.
"As of today, more than three million businesses have gone Google, and over 30 million users within businesses, schools and organizations now depend on our messaging and collaboration tools," Google said in a blog post.
Google Apps include products or services such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs and are seen as the Mountain View, California company's challenge to Microsoft's popular Office software.
Google said it was enhancing the security of Google Apps, which are hosted on the Web instead of on a user's personal computer and accessed through a browser, with a new secure sign-in capability called "two-step verification."
With two-step verification, a user enters a password and a verification code is then sent to their mobile device.
"This makes it much more likely that you're the only one accessing your data: even if someone has stolen your password, they'll need more than that to access your account," Google said.

Fish or frankenfish? FDA weighs altered salmon

WASHINGTON – Fish or frankenfish?
A Massachusetts company wants to market a genetically engineered version of Atlantic salmon, and regulators are weighing the request. If approval is given, it would be the first time the government allowed such modified animals to join the foods that go onto the nation's dinner tables.
Ron Stotish, CEO of AquaBounty, said at Monday's first of two days of hearings that his company's fish product is safe and environmentally sustainable.
Food and Drug Administration officials have largely agreed with him, saying that the salmon, which grows twice as fast as its conventional "sisters," is as safe to eat as the traditional variety. But they have not yet decided whether to approve the request.
Critics call the modified salmon a "frankenfish" that could cause allergies in humans and the eventual decimation of the wild salmon population. An FDA advisory committee is reviewing the science of the genetically engineered fish this week and hearing such criticisms as the agency ponders approval.
Whether the public will have an appetite for it is another matter. Genetic engineering is already widely used for crops, but the government until now has not considered allowing the consumption of modified animals. Although the potential benefits — and profits — are huge, many people have qualms about manipulating the genetic code of other living creatures.
Part of the hearing is focusing on labeling of the fish. It is possible that if the modified salmon is approved, consumers would not even know they were eating it. Current FDA regulations require modified foods to be labeled as such only if the food is substantially different from the conventional version, and the agency has said that the modified salmon is essentially the same as the Atlantic salmon.
If approved, the fish could be in grocery stores in two years, the company estimates.
Approval would open the door for a variety of other genetically engineered animals, including a pig that is being developed in Canada or cattle that are resistant to mad cow disease. Each would have to be individually approved by the FDA.
"For future applications out there the sky's the limit," said David Edwards of the Biotechnology Industry Association. "If you can imagine it, scientists can try to do it."
AquaBounty says it would be the first in the world to market genetically engineered fish. The company submitted its first application for FDA approval in 1995, but the agency did not decide until two years ago to consider applications for genetically engineered animals — a move seen as a breakthrough by the biotechnology industry.
Genetically engineered — or GE — animals are not clones, which the FDA has already said are safe to eat. Clones are copies of an animal. With GE animals, the DNA has been altered to produce a desirable characteristic.
In the case of the salmon, AquaBounty has added a growth hormone from a Chinook salmon that allows the fish to produce their growth hormone all year long. The engineers were able to keep the hormone active by using another gene from an eel-like fish called an ocean pout that acts like an on switch for the hormone, according to the company. Conventional salmon produce the growth hormone only some of the time.
In documents released ahead of the hearing, the FDA said there were no biologically relevant differences between the engineered salmon and conventional salmon, and there is a reasonable certainty of no harm from its consumption. FDA scientists speaking Monday said there are very few differences between the modified and conventional fish.
Critics have two main concerns: The safety of the food to humans and the salmon's effect on the environment.
Because the altered fish has never been eaten before, they say, it could include dangerous allergens, especially because seafood is highly allergenic. They also worry that the fish will escape and intermingle with the wild salmon population, which is already endangered. They would grow fast and consume more food to the detriment of the conventional wild salmon, the critics fear.
The FDA tried to allay both of those concerns Monday, saying the fish shouldn't cause any allergies not found in conventional salmon and that there is little chance they could escape.
A wide range of environmental, food safety and consumer groups have argued that more public studies are needed and that the current FDA process is inadequate because it allows the company to keep some proprietary information private. Modified foods are regulated under the same process used for animal drugs.
"It is outrageous to keep this vital information secret," said Wenonah Hauter, director of the advocacy group Food & Water Watch. "Consumers have a right to know what FDA is trying to allow into our food supply."
Dr. Michael Hansen, senior scientist at Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports, says the agency is relying on too little data, much of which is supplied by the company itself.
European nations have been much more cautious in embracing engineered foods. Ruediger Rosenthal, a spokesman for Bund-Friends of the Earth Germany, said it is unlikely the modified fish would make it across the Atlantic for sale as many Europeans are very skeptical of genetically modified foods.
AquaBounty CEO Stotish countered his product has come under more scrutiny than most food.
"This is perhaps the most studied fish in history," he said. "Environmentally this is a very sustainable technology."
The company has several safeguards in place to quell concerns. The fish would be bred female and sterile, though a small percentage might be able to breed. They would be bred in confined pools where the potential for escape would be low.
In its environmental analysis of the fish released earlier this month, the FDA agreed with the company that there are enough safeguards in place.
Stotish says the fish would be bred in better conditions than many of the world's farmed salmon, and could be located closer to population centers to help feed more people. The company has also said the increase in engineered salmon production could help relieve endangered wild salmon populations.
The company is also arguing that the fish do not need to be labeled as genetically engineered. Stotish said, "The label could even be misleading because it implies a difference that doesn't exist."

Google adds extra security step to e-mail, apps

SAN FRANCISCO – Google Inc. is making it tougher for computer hackers and other imposters to break into e-mail accounts and other password-protected services.  An additional security measure introduced Monday will require typing a six-digit code after an accountholder's Google password is entered. The codes will be sent to people's mobile phones.  The two-step process means it will take more than a password to get into an account, at least the first time that an attempted login is made from a particular computer. After logging in, users can ask Google to remember that their identity has been verified on that device and security codes won't be required to get into the account again.  The system is similar to that employed by some banks for online account access. The extra protection initially will be offered to companies and government agencies subscribing to a Google service that provides e-mail and other office applications. Google also is offering the added security to schools that rely on Google to run their e-mail systems.  People using Google's free Gmail service will have the option of making the security codes a part of their login process within the next few months. That could turn the security codes into a mainstream staple, given that Gmail had more than 185 million active accountholders worldwide in July, according to the most recent data from the research firm comScore Inc.  To make it easier to get the codes, Google has created a free security application for Apple's Inc.'s iPhone, Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry and phones running Google's own Android software.  Google wants more companies, government agencies and consumers to feel comfortable about "cloud computing," — which involves storing vital information on remote servers reached through the Internet.  Many people pick simple passwords, which makes it easier for hackers to break into an account. Requiring a security code that's only sent to the accountholder's mobile phone erects a new roadblock.  Not even the security codes will be enough to protect people's personal information from some trespassers. For instance, Google has acknowledged it fired an engineer in its Kirkland, Wash., office after he abused his privileges to peer into the accounts of four minors.

Emotional Intelligence Could Predict Employee Happiness

Employee happiness has long been linked to better job performance. Now, research suggests that happiness is linked to a quantifiable attribute known as "emotional intelligence." The implication is that if emotional intelligence can be measured, employers can make a more educated guess as to whether their employees will be happy at work.
Emotional intelligence is defined as being able to evaluate and control emotions as well as assess their co-workers' emotion. Those with higher levels of emotional intelligence are more satisfied with and dedicated to their jobs, the researchers found.
"Employees with a higher level of emotional intelligence are assets to their organization. I believe it will not be long before emotional intelligence is incorporated in employee screening and training processes and in employee assessment and promotion decisions," said study author Galit Meisler, a researcher at the University of Haifa in Israel.
Meisler examined the effects of emotional intelligence on office politics, employees' attitudes, behaviors, feelings of justice and burnout.
Employees who did not analyze and control their emotions, she concluded, demonstrated unfavorable attitudes such as burnout, desire to quit and negligent behavior. They also had less confidence in their employers and were less committed to their duties. In contrast, workers with higher emotional intelligence perceived office politics as less severe than their counterparts.
"We also found that employees with a higher emotional intelligence level were less likely to use forceful and aggressive forms of persuasion while attempting to persuade their supervisors," Meisler said in a statement. "Those employees tended to use much softer influence tactics."
Meisler surveyed 809 employees and managers in two public organizations and two private companies.

Baterai ibarat sumber kehidupan pada sebuah ponsel. Jika baterai habis ponsel pun tak mau hidup.

Li-Ion

- Jangan gunakan mode getar terlalu lama. Vibrator ponsel mengkonsumsi daya lumayan banyak.
Misalkan atur backlight agar mati setelah 10 menit ponsel tak anda sentuh.

Menjaga baterai tetap awet

- Matikan ponsel terlebih dahulu sebelum melepas baterai.

Tips Jika Ponsel Terendam Air

Biarkan kartu SIM Anda sampai benar-benar kering sebelum Anda mengecek kondisinya.
  • Keringkan ponsel sampai benar-benar kering. Namun pastikan ponsel Anda jangan sampai terlalu panas. Jangan pula meletakkannya di microwave. Ponsel yang terlalu panas dilaporkan bisa meledak.
  • Uji coba kondisi ponsel Anda setelah benar-benar kering.
Semoga bermanfaat!

Moral search engines squeeze out sin on Internet

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Seek and ye shall find. A number of new Internet search engines created by Christian, Jewish or Muslim entities aim to filter out queries from Web users in a way that is more relevant to those users and keeps them from temptation, alcohol and pornography.
"We think that the other search engines are way too 'main street' oriented. We wanted to provide a solution to explore the Web in a safe environment, where you won't bump into explicit content or immoral websites, like pornography," said Reza Sardeha, the Amsterdam-based founder of the Muslim-oriented search engine I'mHalal.
If one types the world alcohol into imhalal.com, the search engine produces results that explain the Muslim viewpoint on drinking. Type in "pornography," and the search engine produces... nothing.
The 21-year-old Kuwaiti says the site attracts users from places like Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates as well as the United States.
"Actually we know that our users are not only Muslims, and once a week we get an email from non-Muslims as well saying that they like the content of our safe search engine and they allow their children to search knowing they won't bump into offensive content."
For Christians, SeekFind offers "a research tool for people who are looking for biblical and theological content from an evangelical Christian prospective," says founder Shea Houdmann, who operates from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
According to the seekfind.org website, the search engine functions by "only indexing websites that are Biblically-based, theologically-sound, and in agreement with our statement of faith.
"That way, you can have confidence that you will find content which will be God-honoring and spiritually encouraging," it says.
For the Jewish community, the niche is filled by another engine called Jewogle, which bears a passing resemblance to Google.
Danny Sullivan, editor-in-chief of SearchEngineLand.com, said none of these website has "taken off and caught fire" but that "it doesn't mean to say that they can't be good, profitable businesses."
But he said some of the niche websites fail, like the African-American search engine called rushmoredrive, which was closed by its parent firm IAC in 2009.
"It was designed so that when you do a search you get sort of an African-American spin on the Web results that you got back. But that never took off."
Michael Gartenberg, partner at technology research firm Altimer Group, told National Public Radio that some of these niche groups are bringing more users to the Internet.
"You have an emerging generation and emerging culture that wants to take advantage of technology... search engines and the things that they provide but at the same point, be true to their heritage... and not stray from their belief system," he says.

1. Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB)
2. Universitas Indonesia (UI)
3. Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM)
4. Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (ITS)
5. Universitas Gunadarma (Gundar)
6. Universitas Bina Nusantara (Binus)
7. Universitas Kristen Petra
8. Universitas Sebelas Maret
9. Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU)
10. Universitas Negeri Malang (UM).

Fashion Week Takes Over Twitter [INFOGRAPHS]

This fall, brands, marketers and media turned to social media to generate real-time coverage and buzz among followers of New York Fashion Week -- and nowhere was the impact of those efforts more apparent than on Twitter.
According to social media measurement platform Trendrr, which produced the infographs below, more than 165,000 tweets pertaining to Fashion Week were posted between Thursday, September 9 and Thursday, September 16.
Friday, September 10 was the biggest day at 34,000 tweets; hashtag #nyfw also became a trending topic on Twitter that day. Of the tweets delivered during that period, 70% came from female users, 50% were positive and 17% were negative in sentiment.
The conversation generated a number of benefits for brands who were active during the week, most of which received a healthy increase in followers. Diane von Furstenberg led the way with an increase of 3,000 followers, whose show garnered positive reviews both in print and online. Betsey Johnson and Michael Kors both netted around 2,000 additional followers, the latter of whom received positive feedback in 65% of the tweets posted during and after the show.
One of the more surprising beneficiaries of Twitter buzz was South Korean designer Bumsuk Choi, who managed to boost his Twitter following by 1,200 followers -- a 40% increase from his previous following -- despite not having delivered a single tweet in English throughout the week.
“What’s fascinating is that I can remember three years ago watching Fashion Week first show up in the public timeline on Twitter, and now the entire industry is unlocking the value of social/digital media in a diverse and impressive variety of methods," Trendrr Founder and CEO Mark Ghuneim observed. "From the beautiful American Express/Twitter destination site, to Marc Jacobs’s live streams, to QR codes, to Facebook and Foursquare promos, and more, there seemed to be no social network or channel that went un-leveraged this year," he said.
Did you follow New York Fashion Week on Twitter? What interesting trends did you observe?

Jupiter making closest approach in nearly 50 years

APE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Better catch Jupiter next week in the night sky. It won't be that big or bright again until 2022. Jupiter will pass 368 million miles from Earth late Monday, its closest approach since 1963. You can see it low in the east around dusk. Around midnight, it will be directly overhead. That's because Earth will be passing between Jupiter and the sun, into the wee hours of Tuesday.
The solar system's largest planet already appears as an incredibly bright star — three times brighter than the brightest star in the sky, Sirius. The only thing brighter in the night sky right now is our moon. Binoculars and telescopes will dramatically improve the view as Jupiter, along with its many moons, rises in the east as the sun sets.
"Jupiter is so bright right now, you don't need a sky map to find it," said Tony Phillips, a California astronomer under contract with NASA. "You just walk outside and see it. It's so eye-catching, there it is."
Phillips has never seen Jupiter so bright. "To an experienced observer, the difference is notable," he said Friday.
Coincidentally, Uranus also will make a close approach the same night. It will appear close to Jupiter but harder to see with the naked eye. Through a telescope, it will shine like an emerald-colored disk less than one degree from Jupiter.
Jupiter comes relatively close to Earth about every 12 years. In 1999, it passed slightly farther away. What's rare this time is Uranus making a close appearance at the same time, Phillips said. He called it "a once-in-a-lifetime event." While seen right next to Jupiter through a telescope, Uranus actually will be 1.7 billion miles from Earth on Monday night.
Phillips urges stargazers not to give up if it's cloudy Monday night. Jupiter will remain relatively close for many weeks, he noted, providing good viewing opportunities for some time. And for those who are early risers instead of night owls, Jupiter will be visible setting in the west just before sunrise.

Facebook fervor feeds "The Social Network" fascination

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – Promises of elitism, geekdom, betrayal and greed are fueling anticipation for the October 1 release of "The Social Network," Hollywood's take on the birth of social networking king Facebook.
Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg have not sanctioned the film, which is based on the book "The Accidental Billionaires" and is directed by David Fincher, who won an Oscar nomination for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."
The screenplay, written by Aaron Sorkin, creator of hit television series The West Wing, opens with Zuckerberg as a 19-year-old Harvard student who has trouble making eye contact, according to a draft circulating on the Internet.
In the film, a clearly brilliant but socially off-key Zuckerberg is dumped by his girlfriend and takes refuge in his computer, setting in motion the disputed events leading to the creation of Facebook.
Josh Bernoff, a Forrester analyst and co-author of the books "Groundswell" and "Empowered" about social networking, said he can understand the reasons for Hollywood making the movie.
"There is an inevitable fascination with a guy like Mark Zuckerberg that created something so incredibly valuable and has such an unusual personality," Bernoff said.
"Add to that the birth of Facebook is a controversial subject, not least because there are lawsuits that have to do with who owns the idea and how much it is worth," he said.
The film takes viewers back to Harvard, where Zuckerberg was a student with dazzling computer skills who didn't fit in at the status conscious elite university.
Twin brothers Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss were upper classmen at the time and their version of the story is that they enlisted Zuckerberg in 2003 to finish software code for a ConnectU date-finding website but he betrayed them.
Zuckerberg, a second year student at the time, took their code and their idea and launched Facebook in February 2004 instead of holding up his end of the deal, according to a ConnectU lawsuit settled in 2008.
At a hearing in Boston a year earlier, a federal judge advised ConnectU to better show that the bargain with Zuckerberg was anything more than "dorm room chitchat" and advised both sides to settle the matter out of court.
The twins are now appealing the settlement, which reportedly involved 20 million dollars in cash and a load of future stock options which Facebook valued at 45 million dollars.
Tyler Winklevoss told AFP on Friday he had read the screenplay and plans to attend a premiere in New York City.
"If this was a fictional story you were writing out of thin air, your editor would think you'd gone too far and no one would believe it," Winklevoss said. "It is incredible moral transgressions and the earliest days of the founding of one of the most ubiquitous and successful technology companies today."
While he had yet to see his character on screen, Tyler Winklevoss said the screenplay captured that "Mark did something terrible to us."
Facebook, which announced in July that its membership had topped 500 million, did not return AFP requests for comment and Zuckerberg has said he does not plan to watch the film.
"Facebook doesn't want to talk about the birth of Facebook or Mark Zuckerberg's personality," Bernoff said. "They want to talk about features."
Room for intrigue and misunderstanding grew because Facebook sprang from "a cauldron of ideas in college" without backing by venture capitalists who are sticklers for clear contracts and ownership rights, according to Bernoff.
"All great technology companies start in a garage, a dorm room, or as an idea between dreaming college students," Tyler Winklevoss said.
"This story has a sort of meeting of all these different aspects... and large themes of betrayal and duplicitous behavior," he said.
Bernoff expected the film to get the attention of Facebook fans but not to diminish the website's popularity.
"I don't think people sign up for Facebook for the personality or behavior of the founder any more than people use Microsoft Word because they like or dislike Bill Gates," he said.
